House GOP Push Election Integrity Bill That Could Change Everything

“American citizens—and only American citizens—should decide American elections."

The House is once again moving to require proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections, reviving a push Republicans say is critical to protecting the integrity of U.S. elections.

House Speaker Mike Johnson announced Monday that the chamber will vote again on the SAVE Act—short for the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act. The bill passed the House last year but was blocked in the Democrat-controlled Senate.

“American citizens—and only American citizens—should decide American elections,” Johnson posted on X. “House Republicans are determined to codify this commonsense idea with the SAVE Act, which puts in place safeguards to prevent noncitizens from abusing our democratic process.”

Democrats argue the legislation is unnecessary, pointing out that federal law already bars noncitizens from voting in federal elections.

“Current law is very clear,” House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said during the previous debate. “Only citizens, under the United States Constitution and federal law, are permitted to vote in federal elections.”

Republicans counter that loopholes still exist. They point to instances where noncitizens could mistakenly be registered to vote—especially in states where individuals can obtain driver’s licenses or other benefits regardless of immigration status.

“This legislation cements into law President Trump’s executive action to secure our voter registration process and protect the voices of American voters,” Johnson said. “We urge all our colleagues in the House to join us in doing what the overwhelming majority of Americans know is right.”
